Because unpopped kernels can be stored for long periods of time, popcorn was an excellent food to eat when other sources were difficult to find. The popularity of popcorn in the United States has grown steadily throughout the years, but its biggest jumps in popularity were during the Great Depression and World War II when the abundance of corn made popcorn a cheap alternative to other treats.
